After a request from many big names, KSCA is all set to give new names to the Chinnaswamy stands. However, there is one big stalwart missing, which is currently putting the KSCA in the spotlight.
Not long ago, historian Ramachandra Guha, and former member of the Committee of Administrators for the BCCI, raised a request to name the stands at M Chinnaswamy Stadium after some former cricketing stalwarts of Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also came forward to support Guha’s idea, and now the Karnataka State Cricket Association is taking the necessary steps to make it a reality. Recently, this iconic stadium celebrated the golden jubilee of the first-ever Test match played between India and the West Indies. Karnataka also won the Ranji Trophy title in 1974, marking a significant year in the state’s cricket history.
Now, according to reports, 10 stands at M Chinnaswamy Stadium will be renamed, with each stand honouring former Karnataka cricket stalwarts. “The most befitting manner to commemorate this historic occasion is to recognise the legends who have all played pivotal roles in shaping Indian cricket and have also contributed immensely to the game and its growth in our state,” the KSCA management said in its letter, as quoted by The Times of India.
Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble name at Chinnaswamy Stadium stands
We are set to see the names of former India champion coach and The Wall Rahul Dravid and one of India’s finest spinners, Anil Kumble, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium stands, along with the other names, which include two members of the famous Indian spin quartet, Erapalli Prasanna and B.S. Chandrasekhar. Also, wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani’s name will also be honored. Apart from them, the names of Brijesh Patel, Roger Binny, Javagal Srinath, and Venkatesh Prasad will shine at the Chinnaswamy stands.
No Shanta Rangaswamy’s Name at Chinnaswamy Stadium
However, one name that is missing and currently trending is former India women’s captain Shantha Rangaswamy. As mentioned, everyone is asking the KSCA why she was excluded. Many former cricketers have approached the board, and many believe it is certainly an injustice to women’s cricket. “If not Shantha, who? Irrespective of gender, she has a prime place in the annals of Karnataka cricket. Her contribution to the sport is unparalleled. It is unfortunate that the Karnataka State Cricket Association has chosen to overlook Shantha,” former Indian wicketkeeper Kalpana Venkatachar told TOI.
