The IPL 2025 mega auction is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for franchises, with several high-profile players potentially making career-defining moves.
Reports suggest that two of India’s prominent wicketkeeper-batters, KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, are likely to be part of the much-anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. With the retention deadline for franchises set for October 31, it appears both players may seek new opportunities in the upcoming auction, which is expected to bring significant changes to team line-ups as per IANS.
Under the auction rules, each franchise can retain a maximum of six players, using a combination of direct retention and the Right to Match (RTM) card. Teams can retain a maximum of five capped players, while the rest must be uncapped talent. This structure has sparked speculation about the future of key players, particularly Rahul and Jurel.
KL Rahul set to test IPL 2025 Auction waters
KL Rahul, who has been with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) since their debut season in 2022, has reportedly made 1410 runs for the team in 38 matches. Despite this strong performance, rumours are circulating that Rahul is considering entering the mega auction pool. Sources have suggested that LSG might not retain him, leading the Indian star to explore opportunities with other franchises.
“There has been a strong word going around that Rahul really wants to enter the mega auction, as LSG may not retain him,” a source revealed to IANS. This potential shift could spark fierce competition among teams to acquire Rahul, who brings the rare combination of being a capped wicketkeeper-batter and an experienced IPL captain.
KL Rahul has played for several other teams in the IPL, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. If he enters the auction, franchises will likely bid aggressively to secure his services, given his established track record in both batting and leadership.
Dhruv Jurel poised for IPL auction entry
In addition to Rahul, Rajasthan Royals’ wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is also expected to be available in the mega auction. Jurel, who made his IPL debut in 2023 and has since earned 28 caps for Rajasthan Royals, has gained recognition for his finishing skills and adaptability, often serving as an Impact Player.
Despite Rajasthan Royals’ interest in retaining Jurel, sources indicate that the young star may have already declined their offer. A senior Rajasthan Royals official was reportedly seen in Bengaluru, where the Indian team is currently playing, in what is believed to be continued efforts to retain the talented player.
Jurel’s stock has risen significantly after making his Test and T20I debuts for India in 2024, further solidifying his reputation as a dependable wicketkeeper-batter. His strong work ethic and temperament have earned him praise, and should he enter the auction, he is expected to be a highly sought-after player.
High-valued prospects
Previous IPL mega auctions have shown that wicketkeeper-batters tend to attract high bids, with players like Ishan Kishan and Kumar Kushagra fetching substantial paychecks. If both KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel enter the 2025 auction, they will likely generate significant interest from franchises looking to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season. With their unique skill sets and international experience, these two players are expected to be among the top contenders for record-breaking bids.
