Prithvi Shaw unsold for 75 L at IPL Auction “is a matter of embarrassment”, says Kaif

IPL Auction: What was striking is, there wasn’t much discussion around Prithvi Shaw’s name at the mega event.

India batter Prithvi Shaw has hit a new low. Despite being rated as one of the most talented in the country, his “indiscipline and weight” issues have often led him to trouble, that have affected his Team India prospects. Breaking into the national side as a teenager, Prithvi hasn’t been able to do justice to his talent in international cricket or in IPL.

Prithvi Shaw Unsold at IPL Auction

And that meant Prithvi Shaw was not bought by any franchise at the IPL Auction, when his base price was kept at a lowly 75 lakh. Speaking on JioCinema, former DC assistant coach, Mohammad Kaif ripped apart the batter, and narrated his experience with him. Kaif said that despite being given repeated chances, he could never cement his place in the side.

“Delhi has backed Prithvi Shaw a lot. DC had hoped that he is a powerplay player and would hit 6 boundaries in one over. And he did that too. He hit Shivam Mavi for 6 fours in an over. He had a lot of potential and DC backed him to the hilt. We always thought that if Shaw manages to score, we will win. And we gave him a lot of chances,” Kaif said.

DC Disinterested

“There were meetings in the night where we would sit and ponder if Prithvi should play or not because he has been failing. So at night we would decide that Prithvi would not be in the playing XI, and then later on the day of the match, we would change our decision – that, no he will because maybe if he goes big, we would win,” Kaif added.

Kaif also gave a solution to Prithvi, on how he could improve, citing Sarfaraz Khan’s example. “Prithvi got a lot of chances and teams have now finally moved on, and it is a matter of embarrassment that he did not get a bid for Rs 75 lakh. Maybe now, he finally goes back to basics. Someone like Sarfaraz Khan got into the national team by scoring lots and lots of runs.”
