Donald Trump names lawyer Jamieson Greer his US trade envoy | World News

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Jamieson Greer as the US Trade Representative for his incoming administration . Greer played a key role during Trump’s first term and helped impose tariffs on China.
Greer, currently a partner at King & Spalding law firm, has a background in international trade and served in the US Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps. As US Trade Representative, he will focus on reducing the US trade deficit, defending American industries, and expanding export markets.
In his announcement, Trump praised Greer’s contributions, saying, “Jamieson played a key role during my First Term in imposing Tariffs on China and others to combat unfair Trade practices, and replacing the failed NAFTA deal with USMCA, therefore making it much better for American Workers.” He also commended Greer for helping bring manufacturing jobs back to the US.
Greer’s views align with Trump’s approach, having previously supported stronger tariffs and export controls to safeguard US technology from China. His appointment continues Trump’s tough approach to trade, aiming to shift global trade in favour of American industries.
The appointment follows Trump’s announcement to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, aiming to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling. Trump has vowed to implement tariffs of at least 10 percent on imports, particularly from China, and to push businesses to return manufacturing to the US.
