Injury-prone Jofra Archer missing from IPL 2025 auction list, uncertainty looms over England pacer’s future


Archer had reportedly registered for the IPL 2025 auction initially. However, the final list of players who will be going under the hammer on November 24-25 saw the England pacer’s name missing

England pacer Jofra Archer is not a part of the players list that was unveiled on Friday for IPL 2025 auction. The bowler, who made his IPL debut in 2018, did not play IPL 2024 due to injury. He has been released by Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2025 auction. With the bowler pulling out of auction, he is certainly out of the franchise cricket picture and it remains to be seen if he will make any attempt to return to the cash-rich league.

Given Jofra Archer’s history of injuries, it is highly unlikely that any IPL team would want to show interest for the England pacer. On the contrary, veteran James Anderson is one of the England pacers who will go under the hammer in Jeddah.

In IPL, Jofra Archer has played 40 games and has managed to get 48 wickets. He was picked up for Rs 7.80 crore by Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2018 auction. He was retained by the franchise IPL 2020 and 2021 before being released ahead of the 2023 season. He was then picked up by Mumbai Indians, His best season came in 2020 when he picked up 20 wickets. In 2023, he played only five matches and managed to take just two wickets.

Jofra Archer could have chosen to withdraw from IPL 2025 auction keeping in mind workload management. He will be an integral part of England’s setup for the next Ashes tour. If so, he is simply following the footsteps of his teammates, including Ben Stokes, in prioritizing red-ball cricket over other T20 leagues. However, this leaves Jofra Archer in uncertainty over his future in franchise cricket, and in particular the IPL.
