Mohammed Shami stands “strong” after injury scare, gives hope for potential BGT return

Shami had felt pain in his lower back while bowling against Madhya Pradesh on November 29, but managed to complete his spell.

Mohammed Shami has provided a positive update. The right-arm pacer had succumbed to the ground while trying to stop a delivery in his follow-through. He was treated by Nitin Patel, head of the Center of Excellence’s medical panel, who was sent there by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to monitor Shami.

Mohammed Shami gives injury update

The 34-year-old eventually got back up after being treated and finished his spell. But questions over his fitness remained. Did he suffer another injury, or was it a simple niggle that resolved itself? It seems it was the latter. Shami posted an update regarding his injury. Engaging in an intense gym session, he wrote, “Strong legs, strong mind, strong body.”

Shami fit enough for Australia?

The chances of Shami travelling to Australia, however, look slim. He certainly isn’t being called up for the pink ball Test in Adelaide, and if he’s having trouble finishing a 4-over spell, how will he be able to bowl 15-20 overs in a day? The BCCI certainly won’t have confidence in him and can’t afford one of their all-format bowlers to sit out any longer, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 coming up.

There are also plenty of backups that are currently present in India. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Harshit Rana, who all played in Perth, you have five pacers who are travelling with the team. Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep are part of the main squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Yash Dayal, Mukesh Kumar, and Navdeep Saini are the reserves.
