Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus downplayed on Sunday reports of rising attacks on Hindus in his nation, claiming that violence against minorities had occurred “only in some cases” and most complaints were “completely exaggerated”.
His remarks came amid ongoing protests by Hindus in Bangladesh over attacks on their community, temples, and deities. In a televised address to the nation, Yunus attempted to deflect blame from his govt, attributing the violence to political motives.
“The main reason for the few incidents of violence that occurred was political,” he said. Yunus alleged an attempt to destabilise Bangladesh by framing these attacks with a religious narrative. “With the cooperation of all of you, we have firmly handled this situation,” he said.
Yunus also assured that his government is thoroughly investigating all reported cases of attacks on Hindus.
