Mohammed Shami returned to action after 1 year since undergoing ankle surgery
No Rush for Mohammed Shami – That is what the narrative with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is. Initial reports claimed that Mohammed Shami would be flown to Australia to be ready and potentially feature in the IND vs AUS 2nd Test in Adelaide.
But as things stand, things have taken a back seat. Previously, the BCCI Medical Team had given a countdown of 10 days for Shami to be fit and be a part of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. But now, there is no rush as the BCCI wants Shami to gain his fitness in normal time before he can feature in International cricket.
BCCI wants Shami to gain fitness naturally
After missing out on action for almost a year, Shami made a comeback in domestic cricket, playing his first match against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. He was then selected to be a part of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he continued to flourish as Bengal claimed 3 wins in Group A.
Initial plans claimed that Shami would be flown after the Ranji Trophy to join the India Cricket Team in Australia. But with the ICC Champions Trophy and other mega tournaments on the horizon, the BCCI is unwilling to rush Shami. They want the player to gain his fitness naturally. Now a report from Times of India claims that Shami might not travel to Australia and be any part of BGT.
“There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, atleast for now. At the moment, the fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first XI in the opening Test at Perth are doing their job very well,” a source in the Board said.
