Tom Wilson’s 2nd goal of game gives Caps OT win over Devils

Tom Wilson scored his second goal of the game at 4:00 of overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 6-5 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Wilson entered the zone on a two-on-one, kept the puck and fired a wrist shot past Jacob Markstrom. He scored in his fourth straight game to start the season and added an assist for the Capitals, who have won three straight.

Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and moved within 41 of passing Wayne Gretzky (894 goals) for first place all time. Logan Thompson made 26 saves to earn the victory.

Nico Hischier had two goals and an assist for the Devils, who twice rallied from two-goal deficits to force overtime. Markstrom made 31 saves.

New Jersey’s Dougie Hamilton tied the score 5-5 at 12:28 of third period, scoring on a one-timer from the high slot on a power play.

Erik Haula gave the Devils a 1-0 at 4:45 of the first period when he scored from a sharp angle along the left boards.

Wilson tied the score at 6:01, scoring on a wrist shot in the slot off a backhand pass from Connor McMichael on the rush. He equaled the Capitals record for consecutive games with a goal to start the season.

McMichael gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead when he knocked in a rebound at 10:14.

Ovechkin made it 3-1 at 14:18 when John Carlson’s shot deflected off him and in.

Hischier tied the score when he scored two goals 10 seconds apart, the two fastest goals by the same player in Devils history.

Hischier pulled the Devils within 3-2 when he scored from the slot off a pass from Stefan Noesen behind the net 34 seconds into the second period. He tied the score 3-3 when he recovered a turnover shortly after the ensuing faceoff and beat Thompson at the 44-second mark.

The Capitals regained the lead when a stretch pass from Trevor van Riemsdyk sent Andrew Mangiapane in alone for a breakaway goal at 9:15.

Dylan Strome made it 5-3 at 12:33 when he deflected van Riemsdyk’s shot past Markstrom.

Mercer pulled the Devils within 4-3 at 3:39 of the third period when he scored off a cross-ice pass from Hischier on the rush.
